Silver Shadow

Silversea Cruises History

Fort Lauderdale-based Silversea Cruises results from an early 1990s vision in which Rome’s Lefebvre family, former owners of Sitmar Cruises, opted to create a line catering to the cruise industry’s ultra-luxury segment. In 1994, Silversea -- named to signify champagne and caviar excellence -- launched its first ship, Silver Cloud, followed by Silver Wind a year later. Then in 2000 and 2001 came two more larger, similarly luxurious ships, Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper. Purpose-built for pampering, these vessels are designed to carry fewer passengers basking in more space enjoying extreme levels of personalized service, all the while slipping into exotic, often less accessible ports. With Italian officers and a seasoned European staff, hallmarks from the start have been all ocean-view suites, most with private verandas, open seating dining, and overall emphasis on ambiance targeting the cruising elite.

Quick View

Elegant décor lends itself to formal evenings as well as chic, casual days at sea. Silver Shadow, like other Silversea ships, generates applause from affluent travelers with its all-inclusive pricing including all beverages and onboard products enhanced by partnerships with luxury brands such as Bvlgari, Davidoff and Relais & Chateaux. Aboard Silver Shadow, service is personalized to a point where some guests hope never to disembark. Upon return from a Silversea cruise, guests start accruing Venetian Society cruise days and are eligible for special 5 or 10 percent members-only savings on select sailings. In 2004, Silversea sails more than 140 itineraries with calls to 45 new ports, and Silver Shadow sails on 12 different itineraries in the Orient with inaugural calls at 10 Japanese cities. Springtime is cherry blossom season in Japan when Silver Shadow will make inaugural calls just when the famed blossoms traditionally make their appearance throughout the island nation. Silver Shadow’s visits to Japan in April and May also allow guests to enjoy unforgettable cultural experiences set amid ancient temples and shrines, rock gardens, enchanting architecture and stunning mountain scenery. The first three of Silver Shadow’s four cruises to Japan, ranging from nine to 14 days, also feature calls in China and Russia.
